FOUNDER, THERAPIST
In my 16 years of practice, I have found that at my core I am client centered therapist. This means that I believe the process of therapy is driven by the client and what their needs are in the present moment. That said, I have also found that using cognitive behavioral techniques to help sort through unhelpful thoughts can be an important part of the process.
In terms of specialties, I love helping clients work through and release trauma using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and I am also trained in using ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) to help folks work through OCD.
When I am not counseling, I love hiking with my dogs, traveling with my kids, and enjoying the beautiful East Mountains.

I believe clients are the experts in their lives and that empathic connection is central to healing. My goal is to work together to form a trusting relationship within which to process difficulty, understand challenges, and create meaning to move forward.
My therapeutic approach is informed by psychodynamic and developmental theory, particularly relational and attachment-focused perspectives. In addition to DBT and mindfulness strategies, I utilize compassion, active listening and humor to honor your unique strengths, needs and challenges.
I strive to be attentive to social identities, family system dynamics, and larger cultural contexts that impact an individual’s sense of self, personal agency, and worldview.
I receive ongoing training and mentoring from leaders in the fields of complex trauma, DBT, and LGBTQ affirmative practices. I have experience providing psychotherapy and skills coaching with adolescents, young adults, and families. Additionally, I work with families on attachment and attunement within the caretaker-child relationship.
I enjoy collecting house plants, finding perfect denim shirts, hiking and tacos.

I counsel kids and their families on common issues, including school problems, parental separation or divorce, life changes and friendship problems. I also counsel kids with difficult life events and trauma. I have worked in community mental health and two non-profits, followed by 14 years in private practice.
I believe that kids are not “little adults,” and that they have unique needs when they come to counseling. I also believe that kids are inherently wise. They tend to know what is bothering them, even if it cannot be expressed in words. My approach is to let them use toys and figurines to express what is on their minds. This approach is called Play Therapy, and I am a Registered Play Therapist.
I begin each session by first checking in with the parents. Then there is time for the child to do an intervention with me, which might involve brainstorming about a problem, sharing emotions about a difficult event, or learning a new coping skill. Once the intervention is done, the rest of the time is for the child to express whatever he or she needs to. The playroom includes a sandtray with figurines, an art table with supplies, and many different kinds of toys.
Teenagers may find that drawing or using a fidget, is a comfortable way to be in therapy. Teenagers often want to sit by the sandtray while they talk. Some prefer just to sit on the couch, and talk.
For difficult life events and trauma, EMDR may be added to the therapy if appropriate. I originally took Basic EMDR Training in 2010, and got my EMDR certification in 2014. EMDR helps children and teenagers to process events and helps to desensitize triggers. I have done EMDR with children, adolescents and adults.
In addition to being a therapist, I am also an Approved Supervisor in New Mexico. With a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision, I have supervised counselors-in-training taking practicum, including individual counseling and Play Therapy counseling. After I got my PhD, I taught master’s students in counseling as an adjunct instructor for eight years, teaching primarily Abnormal Psychology, Counseling Children and Adolescents, and Legal and Ethical Issues.
When I am not at Turquoise Trail Counseling, I enjoy drawing, hiking, and being with my dog, Rosco. I also enjoy traveling around New Mexico with my family and discovering amazing new places.

Since moving to New Mexico to attend UNM in 1994, I have had the opportunity to work with infants, toddlers, children, adolescents, adults, and families in a wide variety of settings. I have gained a great deal of knowledge and insight into a variety of systems thanks to my experiences working for Children's Psychiatric Hospital, All Faith's Receiving Home, Albuquerque Public Schools, UNM Children's Campus, as well as in private practice. I have a great deal of experience working with family systems, and enjoy providing support to families with infants, toddlers, children, 'tweens, or teens. I additionally enjoy working with adolescent and adult individuals seeking support, and am trained in a variety of therapy modalities, from sand tray, play, and art therapy to numerous talk-based therapies, such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Trauma-Informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I believe my job is to help empower individuals and families to focus on their strengths and overcome obstacles as they inevitably arise in life. Each of us carries our own unique story, and my role as a therapist is to provide the most appropriate type of support in assisting you in creating the best narrative and outcomes for yourself, and if appropriate, your family.
I live locally with my family and enjoy our beautiful East Mountain scenery through hiking and creating art. My artwork is heavily influenced by the nature all around us in New Mexico. My husband, Jason, teaches science at Sandia High School and is a native biologist, constantly pointing out new plants and animals native to our state for me to discover. I strive to stay curious about the world around me and love learning. I carry this curiosity and excitement with me into being a therapist, and am excited to be given the opportunity to walk besides my clients on their path for the duration of their time with me. The best therapy outcomes happen when we work in partnership together, towards a positive goal!

Within my practice I use aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy and have experience with EMDR to address trauma, anxiety and use as a tool to address addictions.
In my spare time I love to hang out with my family and my dogs, I am an avid reader and an amateur chef. I like to make food that reminds me of my native home in the UK.

THERAPIST and CLIENT COORDINATOR
Choosing to seek counseling can often be the courageous first step toward a happier, healthier lifestyle. It is my passion to help individuals make meaning during difficult life transitions. Whether that be a recent mental or physical diagnosis, starting a new career, losing a loved one, ending a relationship, or processing past events. Through creating a safe space, genuine connection, and realistic goals, we are able to create more balance in day-to-day functioning.
My work as a counselor is to hold a safe place for a deeper level of processing. Some techniques I integrate are CBT, Person-Centered Therapy, Solution Focused, and Mindfulness. During your sessions with me, we will work together to create realistic goals in a space where you can feel more empowered.

My therapeutic perspective is rooted in a person-centered, strengths based perspective. I help clients construct responses to difficult experiences in a way that is consistent with their values, identity, and growth. Therapy does not always follow a specific time frame, as we can face emotional, mental, even physical challenges. I believe it is the job of the therapist to help clients navigate this process in a way that best suits their needs.

I received my MA in Grief, Loss and Trauma Counseling in 2009 from Southwestern College in Santa Fe, NM. I spend my free time camping, 4X4ing and whitewater rafting throughout the Western States. I also

Prior to pursuing a career in mental health counseling, I spent years working as a writer and editor. In this role, I fell in love with the process of healing through sharing our stories - which is exactly what I aim to do with my clients. I received my undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University and graduated with my Master’s from UNM in 2024. I have experience working with individuals from toddlerhood to middle age, and I'm passionate about giving clients a space to share their own stories while embracing their individuality and personal strengths. I am also a big believer in the healing power of laughter... so expect the occasional joke or two.
I consider it a massive privilege to work with clients, learn about their victories and struggles, and become a source of encouragement and support, and it's a privilege I do not take for granted. Thank you for letting me play a role in your journey, and I look forward to meeting you!

I am a dedicated Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a deep passion for fostering genuine connections with my clients. I hold a master's degree in counseling from Southwestern College, where I focused on holistic and integrative treatment approaches, particularly for trauma and grief. My approach centers on cultivating a strong therapeutic alliance with clients, helping them develop valuable coping skills and cognitive techniques. I am committed to providing trauma-informed care and empowering individuals on their healing journeys through collaboration and support.
Growing up as the daughter of an immigrant in a military family, I was exposed to diverse cultures and perspectives, which has shaped my open-minded approach to therapy. My upbringing sparked a curiosity about people from all walks of life and continues to inspire my work. Additionally, my time in the Air Force allowed me to travel extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East, further broadening my understanding of the complexities of human experience. As a first-generation college student, I earned my bachelor’s degree in Psychology while living in Germany, overcoming many challenges along the way. These experiences have fueled my advocacy work and my dedication to understanding diverse experiences and perspectives.
I’m particularly passionate about community advocacy, with a focus on supporting veteran mental health. From local initiatives in New Mexico to advocacy on Capitol Hill, I’ve worked to improve mental health resources for veterans and their families. My professional goals include integrating evidence-based techniques into my practice, including animal-assisted therapy, to address mental health challenges like trauma, depression, and anxiety for individuals of all ages.
Outside of my professional life, I enjoy playing tennis, snowboarding, and spending time with my loved ones—especially my llama, Diego. My holistic approach to counseling, combined with my diverse life experiences, allows me to be a compassionate ally for those seeking healing, growth, and empowerment.

Hi there! My name is August (he/they) and I am finishing up my Master's in Counseling at UNM here in Albuquerque. I am originally from North Carolina, where I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and Communication from NC State University, and moved to New Mexico with family just two years ago. After working for the state government, I realized I was ready to go back to school and work towards my dream of becoming a therapist.
I enjoy working with adolescents aged 12 and up, teens, and adults who are experiencing struggles related to anxiety, depression, trauma, and identity, as well as members of the LGBTQIA+ community. In session, I use a person-centered approach in an effort to meet clients where they are and provide what is needed in the moment. I also have training in digital play therapy, which includes playing video games to do the work that would be done in traditional talk therapy, and incorporate CBT techniques when appropriate. As an intern, I am fortunate to have continuous supervision in which I can better hone what skills I have already begun to build. To do this work is a privilege and I truly look forward to all that we can accomplish together!
When I'm not working, interning, or doing homework, I love to play basketball and video games, spend time with my loved ones, and watch hours of Law and Order!
